Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures in motherhood, health, and food. Hope you have a nice stay!

Happiness is a choice

So this spring has been sprinkled with breast cancer of two extremely special ladies in my life.   I really never paid much mind to breast cancer even though I have walked in breast cancer walks and raised funds for research.  I have passively done my mammograms and breast exams without much concern.

That all changes when your eleven year-old daughter is doing daily breast checks and asking when I will be getting breast cancer and will she die of cancer.   I have shown her how to perform a monthly breast check but I have to say, in the back of my mind, I wondered if someone that young could actually get breast cancer.  Does she need breast tissue?  I just do not know the answers.  So the research has begun so I can answer her questions with knowledge.  My heart breaks watching her struggle to understand why breast cancer has touched our lives in two of her role models in her life.  I just do not have the answers for her.

So we will we start to walk the walk and make a mark in breast cancer research.   I will continue to choose happiness.  I am grateful for the current medicine and physician knowledge.  I will continue to pray and support the ladies in my life that bravely face their cancers.

So some facts from Buddy Check9:

-Excluding skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women accounting for 1 in 3 cancer diagnosis.
-One in seven women in Colorado will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
- More than 40,000 women in the U.S. will die from breast cancer this year - this is equal to the population of Littleton, Colorado.
- 450 men will die from breast cancer in the U.S. this year.
- Today, a person who has been diagnosed with breast cancer in the earliest stages has a 98% chance of living at least five more years, on average, compared to only 77% in 1982.
- The overall breast cancer death rate has decreased by about 2% each year since 1990, mostly due to early detection through mammography screening.
- The causes of breast cancer are still unknown: only 5-10% of breast cancer can be linked to a strong family history. Most women with breast cancer have no known risk factors.

I challenge you to make a difference in something that currently affects your life.  At this point, I choose happiness and prayers.  Gods' Speed.
