First Real Interview

Last week the girls were interviewed by a local station about being conjoined.  The girls have been interviewed many times before, but they have never carried on a conversation about being a conjoined twin.  They typically start to giggle and leave the interview.  At the age of 13 years old, they are finally having a real conversation about being conjoined.

As a mom, it was funny to watch as we do not discuss being conjoined typically.  Yes, the girls were joined but that is not what defines who they are as a person.  They are defining their role in the world.  So when I realized that they really have no opinion on being conjoined, no recollection about being conjoined, I really realized that Dr. Handler's words have rung true.  He stated back when we did the MRI images of the girls in my womb, that the quality of their lives was up to James and I to determine.  We had the power.  I felt like he gave me my power that day, we charged forward with the pregnancy, delivery and later separation of the girls.

Watching the girls act like 13 year-olds, I realized that James and I did a great job on letting them figure out who they are and want to be in this world and not let their circumstances on how they came into this world define their lives.
